If you use the 'Lightning' add-on for Thunderbird, you can configure automatic synchronization. Due to the technical limitations of Thunderbird, you have to synchronize each of your calendars (default calendar and other calendars) individually.

How to configure automatic synchronization of your GMX default calendar with Mozilla Thunderbird Local

Thunderbird continually synchronizes with the email server as long as it is running and has access to the internet. If internet access is lost, Thunderbird will synchronize when access is reestablished. Non-synchronized messages are still accessible within Thunderbird.

Info:

Thunderbird does not include its own calendar. In these instructions, we use the free Lightning add-on on a PC with Windows 7.

  1. Install the Lightning Thunderbird add-on and restart Thunderbird.
  2. Press Alt + D to open the File menu.
  3. In the New submenu, select Calendar.
  4. Select the On the Network option and then Next to continue.
  5. Select the CalDAV format.
  6. In the Location field, enter the path https://calendar.gmx.com/begenda/dav/your GMX e-mail address/calendar.
